Final Vienna - until next time

We were caught in the most amazing snow. As you can see, Denise was excited, and so was I - but the glittering streets of Vienna was soon vacated - everyone else took shelter in cafees and restaurants. So we had the streets to ourselves for half an hour. Magic.

Final picture from Vienna:
This moose I saw my first time in Vienna - on a different building. I like this street artist. Anyone know, who he/she is?
I also like the way my shadow is cast.

Beautiful Vienna

The old & wunderbare operahouse - and a magical blue sky at dusk. It's the heart of a city that lives and breathes classical music. (For good and for worse.)

They had amazing christmaslights in the streets - we were so awed by it.

What I drank (and ate) in Vienna pt. 3

Cafe Museum. It hardly gets any more classical Viennese than this.
They just restored it a few months ago. It was the first coffeehouse I visited on my very first trip to Vienna - that must have been 2004 or 2005. Back then it was a lot of marbletopped tables and wooden chairs - just plain cold and snotty. Now we sat in red velvet booths!
The place dates back to 1899 and was the hangout of great artist and personalities like Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Alban Berg.

I got a special coffee, named after some aunt - basically regurlar coffe with lots of foamed milk - yes, I like my coffee with lots of milk - and it's one of the best coffees I've ever had. Mmmm.
Denise had Mozart coffee - with Mozart cream liquour, whipped cream and almondsplits.
We shared a piece of cake made out of black sesame seeds. It was good, and not to sweet. We were still full after the sushi - this was the only cake I had in Vienna!? I'm a bit sad about that, because the cake there is soooo good. 'But why forcefeed myself cake?' I asked - and restrained from ordering truffelcake. (Stupid)
I like the tradition that you get coffee on a silver plate with a glass of water. Here, served by a waiter in white uniform. Oh, the decadence. But the place still had a laid back atmosphere. It was a really nice break.

Oh, and see the tiny sugerpackages - with triangles. Talk about zeitgeist.

What I ate in Austria pt. 2

Running sushi. And really good sushi - or else it's no fun. I really like the small, colorful plates, but otherwise it's not so charming to eat running sushi, considering japanese food being such an aesthetically oriented kitchen.
The place is just beside the Naschmarkt in Vienna, which is a great place to buy food and specialites in small stalls, but it was sunday, so it was of course closed, Austria being a very strickt catholic country and all. Almost all of Vienna was closed, besides restaurants and cafées - and that was really all I desired that day.

What I ate (and drank) in Austria pt. 1

This was New Years Eve. We all got the same... I would not have chosen that on the first picture which was:

1. Leberknödel. It's meatballs with bread in the mix - but the meat is liver. I do not care for liver... ick. The broth was ok, so I had that.

2. Allthough it says 'Stroh', it is not. It is glühwein. It was ok... but I prefer my wine not heated and without spices and other spirits, thank you.

3. It had to be, sooner or later: Wienerschnitzel. I actually really enjoy it, I've had it many times in Vienne and in Denmark as well, allthough the garnish was boring. Luckely I had a plate of salad besides this.

4. Bier vom faß. Mmmmm. I like beer. This was very nice to drink. I only had that one on New Years Eve. On January 1st, well, I had a few more... that's when we partied; me, my friend the operasinger (who is behind my beer in the picture), and the orchestra with whom she sang.

Austrian food is generally very heavy, I think. Not unlike danish food, actually. Then again, I don't care too much for danish traditional food.

In love...

...with Copenhagen. What a skyline to be greeted by on my return from Austria!

I had a nice time abroad, despite some sickness and various difficulties. I didn't take that many pictures, but I have some posts for you in the forthcoming days. Right now I'm just really tired and glad to be home. I realized, walking towards my appartment, that I've lived there for 7 years now, almost to the date. Amazing. Time flies. I've changed so much - and so has the appartment. I really adore it now.

To be or not to be - in Helsingborg

Saturday my friend and I went to Helsingborg.
We went outside on the ferry-deck, and it was soooo cold - and very, very slippery! That's why she's laughing, because it was crazy and a bit dangerous. But we wanted to see Kronborg covered in snow.

Helsingborg was really nice and cosy. We had fika (swedish for coffee and something sweet... right? Well actually only had coffe and sandwich) at Koppi - amazing coffee! Really. They roasted it themselves in the backroom. Yum. Next time I'll buy coffee to bring home.
Afterwards we went to our favorite swedish stores: Lagerhaus, Åhlens, Lindex, Coop.
Later I'll show you the things I bought.

Austria again!

You probably can't tell, but my finger is pointing at Austria.
To make a long story short, my friend has an extra plainticket to Austria, so I'm going there to celebrate New Years Eve! From the 29th until the 3rd. Hotel and everything included - yay!
This will be my 3rd time to Vienna this year - geesh. And I'm not even that fond of the place. But I loooove traveling, and they have great coffee, and I get to waltz on New Years Eve and have some quality time with one of my best and dearest friends. How amazing is that?! I'm so spoiled to have friends like that. What have I done to deserve it?

I've been sick the last couple of days, but I've been out of bed today, alltough I stayed indoors. Tomorrow I'm taking a daytrip to Sweden, with the ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg.
Ship ohoy and adventures abroad!

Ida

Wolves are my friends

Wolves have been my favorite animal ever since I was a very little girl.
I've had two wonderful experiences in Canada, where my aunt and uncle lives. The times I've visited them, they've taken me to Algonquin Park. There parkrangers told us about the wolves in Canada, and afterwards guided all the listeners far into the gigantic park (it's 1/4 the size of Belgium!) In the middle of this enormous park, surrounded by huge trees, the pinescent spicing the warm nightair, the sparkling milkyway above and fireflies buzzing around at the edge of the wood, the parkrangers howled - and floating in from the distance, a wolfpack howled back! You could hear the pups yelping. It was magical both times. I get chills just thinking about it.
The wolves protect me. When I have on my bedlinnen, I don't have bad dreams.

Station To Station

I love that Berlin has such amazing public service transport. I've been using the tram, the bus, the u-bahn and the s-bahn.
The two latter have beautiful stations with colorful tiles. I didn't take pictures at every station, but I wish I had.
The second Potsdamer Platz is a little ss-ish in the typography, but I think it's bold in a city with a history like Berlin.

It's weekend, and I'm busy, and next week will be even more busy. It's the time of the season where students of journalism apply for internships, and it's NOT a pleasent thing... so. A bit of nerves at the time being. That's why it was soooo good for me to be in Berlin.

Oh, btw... I LOVE David Bowie. So... a little song of his. I stole the title to this blog, so it's only suitable, right? (My favorite albums, though, are his Berlin-trilogy (duh!), namely 'Low'...)

Ida
